From:

We set off on our journey travelling east from Broome into the Kimberley region. Heading over the Willare Bridge, crossing the mighty Fitzroy River for our morning tea break. From here we stop at one of the Kimberley’s most famous landmarks the massive ancient Boab Prison Tree, once used to house convicts. Whilst here view Myalls Bore.

Heading east through the Kimberley Cattle country we continue along the famous “Gibb River Road” arriving at Windjana Gorge for a scrumptious picnic lunch. Regarded as a classic world geological feature, the gorge is also a renowned freshwater crocodile spotting site. Keep an eye out for wildlife hiding in the Lennard River that runs through Windjana Gorge where the limestone walls rise more than 100 metres and is home to fossils of shells and sea creatures.

Afterwards, head to Tunnel Creek, a 750 metre long flooded cavern. On this great adventure walk, wade through knee to thigh high water and hear the story of Jandamarra. The tunnel features many beautiful formations including stalactites and stalagmites, and is also home to a variety of bats, olive pythonsand freshwater crocodiles.

Enjoy a swim at the end of the tunnel in a waterhole before heading back to afternoon tea and then onwards back to Broome into the sunset. Time to stop en route for dinner (own expense), with an expected arrival time back in to Broome at approximately 10:00pm.

Departing Broome we travel through a remote and beautiful landscape, while our guide shares stories of local history, people and the environment. Enjoy a morning tea break at Willare Roadhouse on the mighty Fitzroy River and visit Myalls Bore and the notorious Derby ‘Boab Prison Tree’, a relic of some cultural sensitivity due to its use as a prison for local Aboriginals during the era of Kimberley pioneers.

Join the Gibb River Road and travel towards the picturesque Napier Range. Once a Devonian reef, these mountains are over 350 million years old and home to a diverse array of animals and plants. The perfect place to experience the stunning natural beauty of an outback oasis is Windjana Gorge. Beneath gorge walls rising 90m, we search for freshwater crocodiles, local birdlife and indigenous bushtucker.

After a picnic lunch, the afternoon is spent exploring Tunnel Creek, a 750-metre cave system in which we discover secret caves and subterranean wildlife. It is here we also learn the legend of Jandamarra, an Aboriginal freedom fighter who used the tunnel as a hide-out in the late 1800’s. A refreshing swim in an idyllic waterhole is a highlight of the day. As sunset approaches, we visit the historical ruins of Lillimooloora Station to appreciate what life would have been like during early white settlement in the area. There is time for an optional dinner (own expense) en route back to Broome.

Departing Broome after breakfast, we head east towards the Kimberley gorges. As we travel through the remote and beautiful landscape, your personal guide shares stories of local history, people and the environment. Enjoy a break at Willare Roadhouse on the mighty Fitzroy River and visit the notorious Derby ‘Boab Prison Tree’, a significant historical site of the West Kimberley.

This tree, believed to be over 1500 years old and measuring almost 15 metres in girth, is a relic of some cultural sensitivity due to its use as a prison for local Aboriginals during the era of Kimberley pioneers. We make the short detour into the remote outback town of Derby where we will visit the wharf precinct – known for some of the highest tidal movements in the world.

Before long we hit the Gibb River Road, where we have a chance to visit the Mowanjum Aboriginal Community Art Centre learning about the important Wandjina spirit prior to traveling towards the picturesque Napier Range. Once a Devonian reef, these mountains are over 350 million years old and home to a diverse array of animals and plants.
